The fashion industry is the 3rd largest polluting industry in the world. It consumes about 100 million tons of oil every year and is responsible for more than 10% of carbon emissions.
Although they tout their "sustainability" practices, fast fashion industry giant SHEIN releases 700-1,000 new products daily. We know it is impossible to create thousands of new polyester (aka plastic) products every week and claim sustainability. On top of this gross overproduction, over 60% of new clothes are thrown away in the same year they were bought, meaning at least 20,000 articles of SHEIN clothing are tossed by consumers daily.
These numbers are alarming. By constantly pumping out new, low-priced styles every single day, customers are manipulated into buying more and more unnecessary items. SHEIN has come to financially depend on consumers’ aggressive overconsumption. Ultimately, sustainability hinges on reducing production and consumption.
That's why we're calling on SHEIN to improve their sustainability practices and drastically decrease the number of new pieces released. Will you sign our petition today?
