Unnatural disasters are decimating California.
15 of the 20 most destructive fires in the state's history have occurred in the last ten years. This year's wildfires have already caused an estimated $250 billion in destruction, claiming lives and livelihoods, decimating communities, inflating insurance rates to astronomical heights, and leaving people with little recourse to recover their losses or rebuild their lives.
Californians shouldn't have to bear this burden alone. Why should anyone pay to clean up a mess they didn't make? We already know pollution from fossil fuel companies is making these fires more intense. Polluters should be accountable for their actions, and we need your help to make sure that happens. Right now, the Climate Insurance Recovery Act is making its way through the state legislature, and the Polluters Pay Climate Costs Recovery Act is set to be reintroduced in the coming weeks.
If passed, these bills will:
- Allow victims and insurance companies to recover major disaster-related damages from the fossil fuel companies driving the climate crisis.
- Give insurance companies a way to recoup disaster-related losses without raising premiums.
- Create a superfund that polluters would pay into that funds climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience, and recovery efforts for communities.
Add your name to our petition and demand that polluters be held accountable for the damage they've done!
